This was surprising, as the tweets from the Unit Trust Corporation are normally very professional and useful. #HappyBirthdayKevin was a trending topic at the time, and I assume that the UTC were trying to get some extra exposure by riding on the coattails of one of the Jonas Brothers (I'm not proud that I know who Kevin Jonas is...). I sent the following Direct Message:
And then I, along with @KrypticChewie received the following @reply:
I was really impressed by this response, not only because a large corporation was willing to listen to suggestions, but also that they responded publicly.
Truth be told, I don't think there is very much room for improvement. For a #musicmonday a few months ago, the UTC gave away an umbrella to the first three people to tweet all the words of the original UTC theme song (which was/is a very catchy radio ad, part of which is the subject line of this post). Their sporadic tweets with definitions of complicated financial terms are also very helpful. It's no surprise that they scored a 5/5 in my Twitter listing.
Some things the UTC could think about doing
include:
Taking the lead - There is no company in
Trinidad and Tobago that has really taken Social
Media to the forefront. The UTC has the
opportunity to include it in their education and
CSR programmes, and as a result, become the
company most associated with Twitter in T&T, and
the Caribbean.
Tweet-ups - With so many Trinbagonians and West Indians on Twitter now, there has yet to be an official, large Tweet-up. This is not only an opportunity for me to get free beer, but the networking potential at such an event would be helpful.
Keep on doing what you're doing - The bottom line is that customers of the Unit Trust want to know that their money is safe, and they want to get the maximum return. The current twitter stream already does a fantastic job of informing the public about interest rates and account types. Nothing wrong with that at all.
And some ideas for their new blog:
Posts from employees - What is a typical day at the Unit Trust like? What has your new Chief Executive been doing in the last 48 hours? What would surprise us about some of your employees?
Promotion of sponsorships and charity work
- A blog allows you to give some exposure to your
sponsorships and charity work in ways that
traditional media can't. For example, a Habitat
for Humanity project can include video clips,
photos, audioboos and
podcasts all in the same location.
Stories from the international finance and investment community - The blog can be a hub for investment and banking information worldwide. Not necessarily traditional news such as a major bank announcing its quarterly results, but rather, examples of innovation in different fields, such as microfinance and entrepreneurship.
I look forward to seeing what the UTC comes up with.
